Elite Infield Lab

Program Description

Elite Infield Play is an advanced defensive development program designed for serious baseball and softball infielders who want to become more athletic, confident, efficient, and reliable defenders.

Elite infield defense requires much more than the ability to field a ground ball. High-level infielders must be able to read the ball off the bat, react quickly, take efficient angles, control their body, secure the baseball, transfer quickly, and make accurate throws under pressure.

Elite Infield Play combines technical instruction with athletic performance training to develop the complete defensive player.

Build the Complete Infielder

The program develops the entire defensive sequence:

Read → React → Move → Field → Transfer → Throw → Recover

Athletes work on:

  • Ready position

  • Pre-pitch preparation

  • First-step reaction

  • Approach angles

  • Footwork

  • Glove positioning

  • Fielding technique

  • Body control

  • Transfer

  • Throwing mechanics

  • Recovery

The objective is to create efficient defensive movement, allowing athletes to make plays with greater consistency and confidence.

First-Step Quickness & Defensive Range

Elite defenders don't simply have good hands—they get to more baseballs.

Training emphasizes:

  • First-step reaction

  • Lateral acceleration

  • Crossover steps

  • Drop steps

  • Shuffle movement

  • Backhand range

  • Forehand range

  • Charging the baseball

  • Moving through the baseball

Athletes learn how to create better defensive angles and cover more ground.

Ground-Ball Mastery

Elite Infield Play develops the ability to handle different types of ground balls.

Training can include:

  • Routine ground balls

  • Slow rollers

  • Hard-hit ground balls

  • Backhand plays

  • Forehand plays

  • Short-hop reactions

  • Bad-hop preparation

  • Charging

  • Glove-side plays

  • Backhand-to-throw plays

Athletes learn to approach each ball with the appropriate angle, footwork, body position, and throwing plan.

Transfer & Release

At higher levels, fractions of a second matter.

Elite Infield Play focuses on the transition:

Field → Transfer → Throw

Athletes work on:

  • Quick transfers

  • Efficient hand positioning

  • Foot replacement

  • Crow-hop variations

  • Throwing from different body positions

  • Throwing on the move

  • Quick-release mechanics

The objective is to reduce wasted movement while maintaining throwing accuracy.

Throwing on the Move

Infielders rarely have the luxury of standing still before making a throw.

Training incorporates:

  • Throwing while moving left

  • Throwing while moving right

  • Throwing while charging

  • Throwing across the body

  • Throwing from different arm slots

  • Throwing from difficult body positions

Athletes learn how to create efficient throws even when the play doesn't go according to plan.

Double-Play Development

Turning two can change a game.

Training can include:

  • Feed mechanics

  • Footwork around the bag

  • Receiving feeds

  • Quick exchanges

  • Middle-infield communication

  • Turning double plays

  • Different runner situations

  • Game-speed repetitions

The goal is to develop double-play execution that is quick, controlled, and repeatable.

Position-Specific Development

Elite Infield Play can be customized for different positions.

Shortstop

  • Range

  • Backhand plays

  • Deep-hole throws

  • Double-play feeds

  • Throwing on the move

Second Base

  • Double-play footwork

  • Range

  • Quick release

  • Feeds

  • Communication

Third Base

  • Reaction

  • Hot-corner defense

  • Charge plays

  • Backhand plays

  • Strong throws across the diamond

First Base

  • Footwork around the bag

  • Pick techniques

  • Stretch mechanics

  • Receiving throws

  • Defensive positioning

Situational Awareness

Great infielders understand the game before the ball is hit.

Athletes learn to consider:

  • Number of outs

  • Runners on base

  • Score

  • Inning

  • Batter tendencies

  • Defensive positioning

  • Throwing options

  • Force plays

  • Cutoff responsibilities

The goal is to develop infielders who don't simply react to the ball—they anticipate the play.

Game-Speed Training

Practice speed and game speed aren't always the same.

Elite Infield Play incorporates competitive drills designed to increase the pace and pressure of defensive repetitions.

Athletes may train through:

  • Reaction drills

  • Randomized ground balls

  • Timed transfers

  • Competitive fielding

  • Rapid-fire repetitions

  • Decision-making drills

  • Situational defensive challenges

The objective is to bridge the gap between practice performance and game performance.

Performance Testing

JMISS can evaluate measurable components of defensive performance, including:

  • First-step reaction

  • Lateral speed

  • Agility

  • Transfer time

  • Throwing velocity

  • Accuracy

  • Sprint speed

  • Change of direction

  • Movement efficiency

Performance data can be incorporated into the athlete's JMISS Athlete Performance System and JMISS Player Advancement Profile.

College & Professional Preparation

At the college and professional levels, defensive expectations increase dramatically.

Infielders are expected to make difficult plays look routine, execute under pressure, throw accurately from challenging positions, and make correct decisions in fractions of a second.

Elite Infield Play helps serious athletes develop the technical skills, athleticism, defensive intelligence, and consistency required to compete at higher levels.

The Elite Infield Play Advantage

The goal isn't simply to teach athletes how to field ground balls.

It is to develop complete defensive players who can control the infield.

Elite Infield Play helps athletes become:

  • QUICKER.

  • SMOOTHER.

  • MORE ATHLETIC.

  • MORE EFFICIENT.

  • MORE RELIABLE.

  • MORE CONFIDENT.

  • BETTER DEFENDERS.

Built for the Next Level

College and professional coaches value infielders who combine athletic range, reliable hands, efficient footwork, strong throwing ability, baseball IQ, and competitive toughness.
