Combat Catcher Lab

Program Description

Combat Catching is JMISS's elite catcher development program designed specifically for serious baseball and softball catchers who want to develop the physical, technical, and mental skills required to perform behind the plate at a high level.

Catching is one of the most demanding positions in baseball and softball. Elite catchers must combine strength, mobility, quickness, reaction, throwing ability, receiving skills, blocking technique, communication, and mental toughness while handling the physical demands of an entire game and season.

Combat Catching takes a complete athlete-development approach to prepare catchers for those demands.

Develop the Complete Catcher

The program focuses on the complete catching skill set rather than isolated drills.

Athletes develop:

  • Receiving technique

  • Pitch presentation

  • Blocking fundamentals

  • Recovery from blocks

  • Throwing mechanics

  • Transfer efficiency

  • Pop-time development

  • Arm strength

  • Lower-body strength

  • Hip mobility

  • Lateral movement

  • Reaction speed

  • Communication skills

The goal is to create catchers who can receive, block, throw, communicate, and compete at a high level.

Pop-Time & Throwing Development

A catcher's ability to control the running game can dramatically impact a team's success.

Combat Catching works on the complete throwing sequence:

Receive → Transfer → Footwork → Throw

Athletes can train to improve:

  • Transfer speed

  • Footwork

  • Exchange efficiency

  • Throwing mechanics

  • Arm strength

  • Accuracy

  • Pop time

  • Lower-body power

Performance metrics can be tracked over time to identify improvements and areas requiring additional development.

Receiving & Blocking

Elite catchers must be able to consistently turn difficult pitches into playable opportunities.

Training focuses on:

  • Receiving fundamentals

  • Glove positioning

  • Presentation

  • Body positioning

  • Blocking technique

  • Recovery

  • Ball direction

  • Reaction to unpredictable pitches

The objective is to develop a catcher who can provide the pitcher with confidence and give the defense greater stability.

Mobility & Durability

Catching places significant physical demands on the hips, knees, ankles, core, shoulders, and lower back.

Combat Catching incorporates catcher-specific:

  • Mobility

  • Stability

  • Strength

  • Movement preparation

  • Recovery

  • Conditioning

The goal is to help athletes develop the physical capacity to withstand the demands of catching while supporting efficient movement patterns and long-term athletic development.

Mental & Leadership Development

The catcher is often considered the field general.

Catchers are responsible for communicating with pitchers, managing defensive situations, controlling the running game, recognizing game situations, and maintaining composure under pressure.

Combat Catching develops:

  • Communication

  • Leadership

  • Confidence

  • Focus

  • Composure

  • Situational awareness

  • Mental toughness

Catchers learn to become leaders who can influence the game beyond their individual statistics.

Performance Testing

JMISS can measure and track catcher development through metrics such as:

  • Pop time

  • Throwing velocity

  • Transfer time

  • Arm strength

  • Lower-body strength

  • Vertical jump

  • Lateral movement

  • Reaction time

  • Mobility

  • Movement quality

Performance data can be incorporated into the athlete's JMISS Player Advancement Profile, helping document measurable development over time.

College & Professional Preparation

College and professional evaluators look for catchers who demonstrate more than a strong arm.

They evaluate the complete player:

Receiving.
Blocking.
Throwing.
Athleticism.
Communication.
Leadership.
Game awareness.
Offensive ability.
Competitive toughness.

Combat Catching prepares serious athletes for those expectations by developing the physical and technical foundation required to compete at increasingly advanced levels.

The Combat Catching Advantage

The goal isn't simply to make athletes better at catching.

It is to develop complete catchers who can control the game from behind the plate.

Combat Catching helps athletes become:

STRONGER.
QUICKER.
MORE MOBILE.
MORE EXPLOSIVE.
MORE EFFICIENT.
MORE CONFIDENT.
BETTER LEADERS.

Built for the Next Level

At the college and professional levels, catchers are expected to handle tremendous physical and mental responsibilities.

Combat Catching provides serious athletes with a structured environment to develop those skills, measure their progress, and prepare for the next stage of their baseball or softball careers.
